Please Help Save Otis’s Life
After a lifetime of fear, Otis finally found love, safety, and a reason to trust. Now, at just 1.5 years old, he’s fighting for his life, and we’re asking for your help to give him the future he deserves.
After a lifetime of fear, Otis finally found love, safety, and a reason to trust. Now, at just 1.5 years old, he’s fighting for his life, and we’re asking for your help to give him the future he deserves.
Otis had a terribly unfair start to life.
For the first year and a half of his life, he was confined to a crate inside a small well house, with no natural day and night rhythm, no access to the outside world, and almost no positive human interaction.
His only form of stimulation came from someone putting a glove on the end of a stick and using it to poke at him through his cage. He was so terrified that we were told he would climb across the ceiling of his crate like monkey bars, desperately trying to get away.
When A Rainy Day Rescue first heard about Otis, we were simply told there was a feral cat in need of TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). We had no idea what we were about to walk into.
When we arrived to pick him up, we discovered the heartbreaking reality of his living conditions. We took him into our care and had him neutered, believing we were helping a feral cat who had never known human companionship.
But we quickly discovered something extraordinary.
Otis wasn't feral. He was terrified.
Despite everything he had endured, he never once tried to hurt us. He never bared his teeth, never lashed out with his claws, and never showed aggression. He was simply a frightened little cat who had never been given the opportunity to feel safe.
Over the past three months, we've had the privilege of watching Otis discover what life is supposed to be.
He's blossomed into an incredible, gentle, loving boy. He has made friends throughout the rescue, but his very best friend is Subaru. Together, the two of them have even taken on the role of foster dads to a little kitten named Roast.
For the first time in his life, Otis has a family. He has friends. He has love. And most importantly, he finally has a future worth looking forward to.
Otis is currently hospitalized with a life threatening urinary blockage caused by urinary crystals.
A urinary blockage is a medical emergency. Without treatment, a cat can become critically ill and die. Otis needs continued hospitalization and a urinary catheter to keep his bladder draining while his veterinary team works to resolve the blockage. He cannot safely come home while he still requires this treatment.
We've already paid approximately $5,500 toward his emergency veterinary care and covered his first 48 hours of hospitalization. Unfortunately, Otis needs more time in the hospital, and the costs of continuing his lifesaving treatment are more than our small rescue can manage alone.
We've put everything we financially can toward saving Otis. Doing so has also left us facing a difficult reality, we're now struggling to maintain essential supplies, including food for the other cats who depend on us every single day.
But after everything Otis has survived, we cannot bear the thought of his story ending just when his life has finally begun.
Outside of this urinary emergency, Otis is a healthy young cat with so much life ahead of him.
If his veterinary team can successfully resolve this blockage, he has a real chance at a long, happy life. He will need a prescription urinary diet and ongoing monitoring to help reduce his risk of another blockage, but this condition does not automatically mean his future is hopeless.
In fact, we have another cat in our care with a history of urinary problems who is doing wonderfully on a specialized diet. We've seen firsthand that cats with urinary conditions can go on to live happy, fulfilling lives.
We want that same chance for Otis.
We're asking for help from anyone who can contribute, no matter how small the amount.
Every donation will help us continue Otis's lifesaving veterinary care. Your generosity could make the difference between his treatment being cut short and his being able to return home to the family he has only just discovered.
If you're unable to donate, sharing Otis's story can make an enormous difference, too.
Otis spent the beginning of his life knowing nothing but confinement and fear. He has only recently learned what it means to feel safe, to have friends, and to be loved.
He deserves more than three months of happiness. He deserves an entire lifetime of it.
From all of us at A Rainy Day Rescue, thank you for helping us fight for Otis. 🐾
